The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County has announced the availability of the Matt’s Climb Scholarship for 2012.
As it did last year, the Matt’s Climb Scholarship will provide the opportunity for a high school student, who is currently a sophomore or junior and lives in Santa Cruz County, to participate in a wilderness experience at Camp Unalayee this summer.
2012 Matt’s Climb Application and Instructions
Marcus Matthews, a sophomore at Cypress Charter High School, received the 2011 Matt’s Climb Scholarship.
After coming home from Unalayee, Matthew wrote to the Community Foundation:
To anyone considering attending Camp Unalayee,
My experience in the Trinity Alps with Camp Unalayee was one of the best of my life. The counselors were cool people anyone would be happy to know. I feel like I found out more about myself and life. I would go back every year if I could. I don’t think anyone would be anything but glad they had this experience. The woods and mountains are stunning, the people are great and you come out of it stronger and more confident.
The Matt’s Climb Scholarship is dedicated to Matthew Kennedy, an avid outdoorsman who was killed in a snowmobile accident in 2001 at the age of 18. His family created the scholarship at the Community Foundation as a way to honor his spirit and to help others. “We want this scholarship to be a turning point for some young person, someone who would ordinarily never be able to participate in a wilderness experience,” said Matt’s grandmother, Eliza Livingston.
