In 1974 Tom was offered a position as a Camp Counselor at Unalayee by the director at the time, James Camp (yes, he is the father of Sarah Camp – Unalayee’s now director – and no, they do not own Camp Unalayee – but are almost as dedicated to it as Tom is). And he never left. This will be his 40th summer at CampU. Originally hired to insure that the camp vehicles were kept in good operating condition and be a counselor in his spare time, his job for the last 25 years or so has been volunteer Janitor in Chief.
Unalayee just happens to be Tom’s place of friends too. He has met and maintained many of the friends that are the most important in his life at CampU. He has served on the Board of Directors on and off for 30 years and served as an officer many times. He is currently the Secretary of the Board. As it is easy to tell from his short biography, Tom brings an incredible sense of Camp tradition and knowledge of Camp history to the Board.
Until he retired, Tom was a programmer by vocation for UC Berkeley, JHA, and Autodesk. Fortunately all of his employers allowed him every year to take a leave of absence to full-fill his life’s advocation – Camp Unalayee’s Summer Camp for Kids.
