Sally was introduced to Unalayee in 1972; of course she had a fantastic time and loyally attended first session for five years. Some things she loved about Unalayee: chopping wood (ask to see her scar), rediscovering her Camp family each summer, crafts of all types, hiking (OK, maybe not at first, but she soon came to love it:), and helping in the food shack, where she was always made to feel welcome and useful.
Those weeks at Unalayee had profound impacts on her: the sense of self-sufficiency in the outdoors she gained, the commitment to community, and the pull of the mountains have enriched her life immensely.
In her post-Camper years Sally spent several seasons working as a ranch hand and attended UC Davis to study Animal Science. Upon graduating she began a nearly 30 year career at UCD as a research manager while helping her husband Lloyd run his organic vegetable farm and raising two fabulous sons. Their son William (AKA Bird) became a longtime Unalayee camper and counselor.
Her early Unalayee years left a deep imprint. Sally has returned to her Camp home where she’s spent at least a month every summer since 2013, again working in the Food Shack.
She joined the Camp Unalayee Board in September 2020 and looks forward to helping nurture Camp U’s people and programs for many years to come…and to more years of scooping granola in the Food Shack, where she still feels welcome and useful!
