Unfortunately, wildfire and smoke are part of the landscape of Camp and our region. Unalayee is committed to our campers’ safety and to clearly communicating wildfire conditions at Camp to parents, staff, and the broader community.
In the event that wildfire smoke enters the basin or regions where our hikes might visit, Unalayee will monitor the air quality and take action in accordance with Federal guidelines. We will also notify parents via this website, email, social media, or the camp office of any wildfire events that impact Camp.
Note that Unalayee maintains continues contact with the USFS and they are aware of our presence and population. They have visited our site and have reviewed our safety and evacuation plans. They are confident we can keep everyone safe in even the most extreme event. They will provide rapid, immediate emergency assistance in the unlikely event it is necessary.

If you are concerned about wildfire impact and your camper, please take a moment to locate where the fire is in relation to Camp’s region. If it is more than 30 miles away, there is little need for concern (and often no need for concern even if it’s closer).
Specifically, Camp will take the following actions in case of wildfire in the region:
- In case of a newsworthy fire in the region that does not impact Camp, we will update the community via this website and a general email.
- If the Air Quality Index (AQI) is in the range of 101-150 for 1-2+ consecutive days, we will contact parents of campers in sensitive groups and send out updates via email and this website. If this continues for more than four days and is forecast to continue, we will contact parents for the upcoming session.
- If the AQI is in the range of 151-200 for 12-24+ hours, we will contact parents of campers in sensitive groups and send out general updates via email, this website and the office phone message. If this continues for more than three days, we will contact parents to let them know and give them the option of picking up their camper.
- If the AQI is in the range of 201-300 for 12-24+ hours, we will contact parents of campers in sensitive groups and send out general updates via email, this website and the office phone message. If this continues for more than two days, we will contact parents to let them know and give them the option of picking up their camper.
- If Camp decides to end a Session early due to wildfire smoke, we will contact all parents with instructions for picking up their camper. If we need to cancel an upcoming session, we call and email all enrolled families.
- If the Forest Service informs us of a potential threat to Camp, we will contact parents and provide regular updates via email, this website, and the office phone message.
