Martha has been a member of the Camp Unalayee community since 1990 when she rode the bus up to Scott Mountain Summit for the first time as a camper. Martha’s two sisters, Bubbie & Hannah are also Camp “lifers” and summers at Unalayee have been the norm for all three Scherzer sisters. Over the years Martha has been a camper, CIT, counselor, Program Director, CIT Counselor, Food Shack assistant, and work crew volunteer. She served on the Board of Directors for several years in the early 2000’s and worked on fundraisers and reunions. Martha met her husband Dominic at Camp when they were working together as staff and now they have three kids, the oldest two are already experienced campers!
Martha graduated with a BA in Global Economics from UC Santa Cruz, then went on to earn a Teaching Credential from San Francisco State. She taught elementary school in San Francisco, Menlo Park, and Madison, WI. She loves teaching and has always included a love of the outdoors and environmental stewardship in her curriculum. Mrs. Stryker had a reputation of being the “crunchy, outdoorsy, recycling” teacher in every school where she taught. She even served on the Madison School District’s school garden committee, creating curriculum extensions for teachers utilizing outdoor classroom spaces and school gardens.
When she’s not at Camp, Martha stays busy with her three awesome kids, listens to podcasts, works in the yard and garden, enjoys kitchen dance parties, and dabbles in Brazilian cultural arts like capoeira and samba. She makes an effort to participate in social justice work, community organizing and political activism when possible and always loves hanging out with extended family, especially being silly with kids in the woods!
