CITs on Trail: A Leadership Training Program with a focus on backpacking wilderness skills.
We often hear from our CITs (Counselors-in-Training) that they would like more training in the essential “hard skills” needed for wilderness leadership. We are pleased to announce that this year we will again be offering a special CIT program with an additional focus on these skills, including: navigation, map and compass, contour theory, cross country route finding, knots & tarps, fire building, camping stove use and maintenance, back-country cooking, and wilderness first aid.
The CIT on Trail (CITOT) program will function similarly to one of the hiking or wild programs offered at Camp Unalayee. CITs will spend 11 days backpacking and building their wilderness skills and the other 4 days preparing at Base Camp and debriefing their trip at the end. This program is ideal for those interested in learning how to plan and lead their own backpacking trips. This program would also be a great choice for returning CITs interested in bolstering their hard skills.
- Hands-on practice with the skills listed above
- Food planning, hike prep, and route planning

- Meet-up with younger campers to practice working with kids
