The campers are on the bus! After making the 6am trudge down the road, our first batch of campers for this summer are on their way home (maybe a little dirty and tired), but as happy as clams and singing camp songs!
We had 75 campers up in our basin this summer for 1st Session, our 9 day summer camp program that is designed for new campers who need an abbreviated backpacking camp experience in order to break the ice.
We had so much fun exploring the wilderness, playing games, and just enjoying the out of doors over the last nine days. Except for a little rain on the walk up to camp on the first day, we had clear skies and increasingly beautiful weather throughout the session. There was enough snow left around the Trinities to have a 4th of July Zing Cone, but it’s melting fast!
Here are some 2012 1st sessions highlights:
- Special Day – All the farmers were cursed and had to sing all day long. Thankfully our campers found the lost song and dance and were able to reverse the curse!
- Campfire – from “Yoja” to Vampires to Pickles to singing, we’ve had it all!
- Fishing! Man did we have a lot of fisherman this session! As many as 25 campers were seen around the lake at one time fishing.
- Group Games – Everyone got together on day two and played Cross the lava, Spider web, Narly Wave and other team building games.
- Two Trail Tribes went out for six-night, seven-day hikes, and came back dirty and smiling.
- After coming upon an injured hiker in Bear Basin one of our hikes assisted in an emergency evacuation (not of a Camp Unalayee participant). Thanks to the help of our staff members everyone involved got the medical help they needed and are successfully recovering.
