The Camp Unalayee summer season has been going splendidly up in the Mosquito Lake basin. We’re already two thirds of the way through our summer, with only 3rd Session and August Family Days left to come.
We had 75 Campers join us for 1st Session, 78 campers during 2nd, and over 20 families consisting of over 60 people up at camp for July Family Days. The new camper orientation, redesigned in order to get campers more involved and making connections more quickly, which Doug Lightle mentioned in our last newsletter, has been working wonderfully. We are making friends faster than ever at the ‘place of friends.’
We will have 92 more eager campers in the basin on August 1st for 3rd Session! This will include 16 campers and two chaperones from the Ambitious program of Japan, which has been sending a group of kids to 3rd Session for the last ten years. We are very much looking forward to this upcoming full session, which also features this year’s special program: Girls’ Getaway! Eleven girls, aged eleven to fifteen, will head out into the Russian Wilderness for an eleven day backpacking adventure!
The composting toilet project we first told you about in the May/June Newsletter is well underway. The hillside next to the old central Biffy has been excavated and the foundation for the building has been poured. Many thanks to Chris Williams for his leadership, hard work, and multiple volunteer hours.
Thanks to a number of private donations, we were able to purchase a battery powered AED, and our campers are safer than ever. No need to use it yet… and we hope it stays that way.
During 1st Session one of our hikes assisted in an emergency evacuation (not of a Camp Unalayee participant) after coming upon an injured hiker in Bear Basin. Thanks to the help of our staff members everyone involved got the medical help they needed and are successfully recovering. We are very proud of our counselors and campers for the manner in which they handled this situation.
Wow, so much has happened and so much is still to come! Read on for more details. If you’ve already participated a Unalayee program this summer please take our new survey. If we won’t get to see you up in the mountains this summer, we hope to see you at one of our events in the off-season or next year up at camp!

What’s the best part of e-mails from Camp during the summer? The photos! If you can’t be up in the mountains yourself at least you can see the action and imagine what it would be like to be tossing a ball around or sunbathing at the lakefront.
Here is a little preview to kick-start your imagination:

Ok, this should be an easy one… What Special Day theme was the old Toyota dressed up for in this picture? Bonus question: What year was that Special Day held in?
