It’s hard to believe summer is actually over. Wasn’t it just yesterday that we packed up the trucks and headed up to the mountains? And now we’ve been back in the city (and many of us back in school!) for over a month!
We had a fantastic summer up in the Trinities. 245 campers attended a Unalayee session this summer, and 102 people attended one of the two Family Days Programs. If you missed this summer or just want to re-live the magic, I invite you to read about each of our programs on our Blog and see the photos from this summer on our Picasa Web Album.
Just because summer is over and base camp is closed up, doesn’t mean that Unalayee is out of business! We are excited to stay in touch with you during the off season and hopefully get you involved in all that goes on with the camp community throughout the year. Read on for the early fall happenings.
Thinking of you and the mountains,
Camp Unalayee
As you may have noticed, we think 2012 was a fantastic summer with a great bunch of kids, families, and adults up in the wilderness. But what we’d really like to know is what YOU think about our programs and your family’s experience with us. We invite you to take one of our follow-up surveys and give us your opinions.
We greatly appreciate and highly value any and all feedback or advice
you are willing to give us. The surveys are anonymous and every
question is entirely optional. Without the advice of people like you
we cannot continue to improve our programs and keep Camp safe and fun. Thank you for taking the time to make camp a better place.
Didn’t attend Unalayee this summer? Want to tell us something that’s not on the survey? We’d love to hear your success stories, get advice on outreach, or hear what kind of off season events and Unalayee news you’d like to have during the year. Reply to this e-mail or send us a note anytime and give us your thoughts!

Unalayee voted best of the best!
Last year we won the Gold Medal for best sleep-away camp on the Peninsula in Bay Area Parent Magazine’s annual Best of the Best Contest. And guess what? We won again this year! We also received the bronze medal for camps in San Francisco.
Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters who voted for us and continue to show us the love year after year.

Where are they now?
Unalayee-ites in the Peace Corps
Although many Unalayee campers go on to be counselors at camp, they also tend to end up far and wide a few years down the road. Unalayee alumni seem to pop up in every sort of field, from computer technology, to performance art, to politics. But today we’d like to highlight some of our past campers, who first became camp counselors, and then went on to be Peace Corps Volunteers.
In recent years we’ve had Unalayee graduates Adam Leff, Brendan Moroso, Jordan Bensky, and LaRocha LaRiviere join the Peace Corps in Micronesia, Morocco, Kyrgyzstan, and Senegal respectively.
LaRocha, who is currently in Senegal, arrived in Africa in March 2011 and will complete her Peace Corps service in May of 2013. During graduate school she realized that she wanted hands-on experience working with health programs abroad and the Peace Corps presented a fantastic opportunity to do just that. As she puts it: “Thanks to studying abroad and my wilderness backpacking background I was a shoo-in, my application went through in record time, and I’m learning a lot and having a fantastic experience in West Africa.”
I invite you to learn more about LaRocha’s amazing experience by checking out her Blog. She is a fantastic writer, and frequently posts amazing pictures of Africa and the people that she works and lives with.
