We really can’t believe that the summer is already more than half over. It seems like just yesterday that we stuffed all the staff into the camp trucks and headed up to the Trinity Alps to start Staff Training – and believe it or not, our 3rd session starts today!
So far it’s been an incredible summer. 1st session we had 92 campers grace us with their presence – including 16 Counselors in Training. The next generation of camp counselors are going to be Rock Stars!!! 2nd Session another 94 super stoked kids joined us and wandered all over the mountains – as far as Grizzly Lake, Holland Lake, and the Marble Mountain Wilderness. And today we will welcome 93 new campers (including 20 from the Ambitious program from Japan) into our basin. We can’t wait to have some summer camp fun with them!
Yes, it’s been dry. The springs are lower than we’ve seen them in a long time and the water levels in the lakes are below normal, but we won’t let that stop us from having a good time! Thanks to the water purification chemical AquaMira we’re not having any trouble with drinking water, and all of our lifeguards have been doing a great job of checking the lakes for new obstacles and making sure that swimming is still safe – plus, the lake water is the perfect temperature for swimming!
The conclusion? Summer is too short – we wish we had more days to spend with all of you in our wonderful mountains!
Last Chance for Family Days 2014!
In just 19 short days, 39 staff members, 18 radios with fresh batteries, 15 first aid kits, 6 boxes of t-shirts, 3 camp vehicles, 2 directors, and a myriad of other camp gear and food will be headed up to the Trinity Alps Wilderness to start Staff Training and kick off the 2014 summer season.
As we embark on Camp Unalayee’s 65th year of providing outdoor experiences to youth of all backgrounds, and our 55th year in our beloved Mosquito Lake basin we are ecstatic to report that we are looking at one of the most robust summers in years. All three of our camper sessions have been full since April 15th – including our 33 day Walkabout Program.
Over the last 54 years in our summer home we estimate that our campers and staff have traveled over 341,820 miles on foot! What we can’t seem to figure out – is how many single socks, that clothed those feet, didn’t make it home with their owners! We are so excited for your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and friends to join us this summer and add another 9,260 miles and who knows how many socks to our count!
It’s time to plan for our annual spring reunion! Get ready for a weekend of activities, music, food, friends, prizes, campfire, and a sleepover! We like to think of it as a mini Family Days – except with a much shorter drive!
This is a Camp Unalayee reunion, but it’s also an awesome event for your friends from outside our community! It’s a great chance for them to get to know us, get involved with camp, and learn about how camp helps kids grow and learn to appreciate the wilderness – so invite the whole clan!

Hello Unalayee Friends,
I first stepped foot in the Mosquito basin 22 years ago, and since have always planned to return year after year. Never did I expect to return to long hours spent in board meetings. Yet nothing could be more worth it. Nothing else in my life has compared to my experiences as a camper at Camp Unalayee – therefore, it is a privilege and an honor to spend my time making those experiences possible for others.
As a new member of the Camp Unalayee Board of Directors, I have been exposed to all the hard work that happens year round to make Camp a reality for 100s of kids. This past year I have seen some major accomplishments, including full enrollment and the successful transition of leadership to our new directors.
As we celebrate our 65th year we are working to ensure another successful 65 years and many more after that. As part of this work we have been restructuring the Board while maintaining the same summer camp traditions that we all love and care for. A quick peek at our Board’s goals for the year include:
The Board alone cannot accomplish these goals. We encourage and depend on community support every step of the way. There are a variety of different ways that you can get involved: serve on a committee, consider joining the Board, help with a fundraiser, make a donation, or volunteer up at Camp. Just let us know!
We appreciate all of the support we have already received from the community and we look forward to working with all of you in the future!

Bonus question: How many are members of the Board of Directors?
